Next Up: Best Retailers for Home Maintenance & Repair
|
This page is all about taking care of the home. For the homeowners, your house, condo, or townhouse need regular maintenance so that, on the one hand, it remains a livable place where you can relax and breathe and, on the other hand, it maintains its value (and hopefully, go up in value) through the sweat equity you put in. For the renters, while you don't have the financial responsibility of the homeowner, you still want the place you're renting to be a place that is comfortable to come home to after a long day of work. You'll need things like a comfy sofa, dining table, among many other furniture to make that happen.
In this way, the following retailers are essential places to pick up the vital homeware and repair kits to make your home the way you want it to be. It's the only way to make your dollar go far. |

Home Depot |
|
Home Depot is the juggernaut of hardware stores. This retailer is where pretty much where many do-it-yourselfers and professional contractors go to buy the essential materials to build, decorate, or repair a home. Hannah and I come to Home Depot about once a month to get anything from rodent traps (yes, we have rodent issues at home), paint primer, to gardening supplies. During the pandemic, our refrigerator gave out. So we even ordered a new fridge from Home Depot. We have an in-the-city local hardware store that is much closer to our home. (More on this local hardware later.) But the supply there is very limited. So we don't mind the small 20-minute trek to the nearest Home Depot.

Ikea has figured out how to offer low-cost furniture by leaving the furniture assembly to the customers. It is a brilliant way to pass off the saving from the cost of labor to the masses by having the bed that you buy being put together by the shoppers when they get it home. Ikea is perhaps THE place to go to if you're looking for affordable furniture items.

TargetWhere do I begin with Target? It is probably one of the retailers with the most diverse array of products on sale. Nothing luxurious. But everything that most families need that is of great quality. We also love the fact that they have their own Target brands that are equally as good as the name brands. We've also noticed that Target is setting up shop in the interior of Washington, DC where space is a challenge. They are no longer sitting on the outskirts where residents have had to travel to find a Target.
Joann Fabric |
|
We shop at Joann Fabric from time to time, especially leading up to certain holidays, to make costumes for our children, covers for our duvet, among other home projects. For instance, last Halloween Hannah purchased a bunch of fabric to hand make a car costume for our first grade son and a mermaid costume for our fourth grade daughter. Joann is really a great store for those who want to manifest their creativity and those DIY projects at home.

Amazon.com |
|
Amazon.com is the behemoth of all retailers. This is where you go to buy anything you can ever imagine. Hannah and I have had our Amazon Prime membership for several years now, in part to receive the items we purchase on their website quickly, in part for the convenience of not having to leave our home to buy anything. Because Hannah has been a regular buyer on Amazon.com, the company has selected her to participate on product reviews whereby the company mails her a bunch of stuff to our home for free. Her only obligation is to write product reviews online from time to time. All the free stuff she's received the past many months have played a great part in our family budget. For instance, we've received free soccer cleats for our son, free dresses for Hannah, free art supplies for our daughter to name a few.
